Introducing Our 36W to 60W GaN Power Adapters: Contributing to Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction

In today's world, where information technology is advancing at breakneck speed, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly enhanced our quality of life. Historically, the main power switch devices in adapters have been dominated by silicon-based technologies. However, with the rise of Gallium Nitride (GaN), a representative of third-generation wide-bandgap semiconductors, traditional technology is now facing significant challenges and potential replacements by GaN technology. GaN power devices are gradually infiltrating various power supply solutions due to their advantages, including low on-resistance, low junction capacitance, no reverse recovery, high frequency, and high efficiency.


Recently, we at Super Dragon tested three demo boards of GaN adapters: a 36W 12V wall plug adapter and two 60W 12V models, one wall plug and one desktop version. Compared to traditional silicon MOSFET adapter solutions, which are often burdened with heavy heatsinks and complicated processing, our GaN solutions eliminate the need for a heatsink. 


This advancement reduces production complexity, lowers labor costs, and significantly decreases the weight of the adapters. Additionally, the output efficiency of our GaN adapters reaches an impressive 92% to 94%. This compact and lightweight design makes GaN adapters particularly suitable for home and office environments, saving space while delivering a more efficient, safe, and reliable charging experience to meet users' long-term needs.

Key Features of Our 12V 3A 36W Wall Plug Power Adapter

The core switching device in our adapter is the CoreGaN GaN device CE65H600TOEI, which boasts a voltage rating of 650V and a transient voltage rating of 800V. With a low on-resistance of 600mΩ and reduced gate charge, it offers fast switching speeds and low losses, significantly enhancing overall system efficiency. Moreover, its wide driving voltage range (±20V) increases system reliability, providing greater efficiency compared to traditional silicon (Si) devices. This device is packaged in a TO-252 form factor, which is cost-effective, has high thermal mass, and exhibits low thermal resistance. This packaging allows for expanded power application ranges and demonstrates robust heat dissipation and thermal shock resistance, resulting in superior thermal reliability.


An efficient power adapter must achieve high system efficiency during power conversion. This capability means it minimizes energy waste while converting power to meet the voltage and current requirements of devices. Our GaN-based power adapters excel in system efficiency conversion, voltage stress testing, ripple testing, EMI testing, and thermal testing, providing stable power supply to devices while effectively reducing energy waste and ensuring safe operations.


With GaN technology maturing and production processes improving, applications in fields such as 5G communication base stations, power electronics, and automotive inverters are rapidly expanding. This makes large-scale production of GaN devices increasingly feasible. Compared to MOSFETs, GaN offers superior electron mobility, a wider bandgap, and lower resistance, making it particularly outstanding in high-frequency and high-power applications. We anticipate that GaN will replace MOSFETs across various sectors as the replacement process accelerates, with cost advantages soon eclipsing those of traditional MOS technology.
